This collection brings together primary source material for music making in private homes in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It can be compared with and used alongside the University of Southampton's Austen Family Music Books collection, which features similar domestic musical materials from the same period. Domestic Sheet Music and Manuscripts includes several different source types. The majority of the collection consists of binder's volumes of printed sheet music,...

The Collection is named after the late Professor Percy Ford, who, with his wife Dr Grace Ford, brought the collection to Southampton and conducted research based on the collection. The Fords compiled 'breviates' or 'select lists', which form the basis of our catalogue records for those publications received before October 2007. From a...

The University of Southampton Hartley Library's Ford Collection of British Official Publications has an excellent, although not comprehensive, stock of non-Parliamentary documents. Our earliest ones date back to the 19th century and we still selectively collect print copies of key documents. A selection of documents are being made available online from the collection and incorporates earlier BOPCRIS digitisation projects.

These comprise books, exhibition catalogues, knitting patterns, journals and magazines. Since acquiring these collections we have continued to add new acquisitions related to knitting from work by contemporary artists to traditional stitchionaries. Our aim is to continue building the collection in the same spirit of enquiry as the collectors. There has been a peak in...

This collection consists of eighteen printed and manuscript music books owned by members of the Austen family, including the writer Jane Austen, in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Many are binder’s volumes, compiled from separate manuscript or printed sheet music items bound together for an individual user. Others are personal manuscript albums made wholly or principally by a single copyist. Although some volumes were compiled as early as the 1750s, the majority date from Jane...
